Communication Design

I’m often asked, “what do you do for work”? My answer can sometimes vary, but comes down to “designing marketing collateral”, but that would be just the tip of the iceberg.

In my career, and not in any particular order, I’ve shot/edited videos, photographed people/places/events, designed websites/eBooks/brochures/presentations decks/white papers/emails/info-graphics/logos/branding/print-digital ads, and in-person event & webinar collateral that may include the above more, or less.

All those items above include a lot of research into products, processes, tools, best practices - summarized as gaining the context needed to do the job right. I’m a researcher at heart, so digging in to find what will work best given the context and constraint, is what I thrive on.

Design is also an iterative process that involves many people, moving parts and communication. It’s not easy, and there are often many opinions about what is “best” or “right” for a specific project or piece of collateral. Listening, and often interpreting what a client wants, or specifically needs, is a skill that’s taken years to hone but is never mastered. Like learning and playing a new instrument, there are never-ending ways to approach a project and execute on it that may work well one week, but change again each time. Design improvements are never-ending, but it’s good to know when it’s “good enough” to ship, and then revisit it again or do a complete redesign.

Communication design is a description that wraps a not-so neat little bow on top of how an idea about communicating “something” gets feet, walks and then runs through the finish line. One never the same as another.

The next time you talk to or work with a Designer, like many other job titles, dig a little deeper, and you may unearth a myriad of stories…and skills/talents.

This thing IS on!

As we embark into 2023 in an increasingly unpredictable world, I’m grateful for the friends we’ve made, the relationships we have and continue to build, and the many individuals and family that help support us through all of life’s challenges. A quote I saw recently said, “our friends are the family members we choose”. So true!

I’ve been working at Smartsheet for the last two years doing design support on many types of projects. I’ve been able to work with some amazing people there, and will continue that relationship throughout 2023 as I take on some new creative projects with their product marketing team. Working with so many different types of people, I’m often helped and reminded by the C.S. Lewis quote, “Humility is not thinking less of yourself but thinking of yourself less.”

Enjoy your 2023!

Life moves pretty fast...

Life and work move fast and the changes never end. I’ve been working as contract Designer for the last year at SAP Concur, and prior to that, I was at Microsoft for three years.

The marketing organization I’ve been working in for the last year at SAP Concur has been going through their own reorg, and is often the case, they’ve decided to consolidate a few things and move our workload to an internal group.

As this door closes, other doors open with opportunities to grow and thrive. If your marketing group needs some professional design assistance, I’ll be available beginning October 1, 2019. Please reach out and let’s connect on ways to move your brand forward going into 2020!

The more things change ...

As we say goodbye to 2015, I'm also saying goodbye to my studio in Kirkland. The signs came down today and the doors will close on Dec 31st. It's been a great space to work and shoot in over the last few years and was a central location to operate from. I appreciate family, clients and friends who supported me. Thank you to all of you!

As a photographer and a designer, I made some decisions and changes that included working as a designer first again, and photographer, second. I'll still be shooting some corporate events and also doing portrait work by special request.

As a designer, I provide project and product design collateral for company marketing and communication campaigns. I've been working as designer for over seventeen years and I'm happy to continue my work with a small group of creatives that provide consulting, writing and design assistance to local and global companies.

There will be some changes to my website over the next few months to reflect the changes in my business and my latest work.

Merry Christmas, happy holidays and may your 2016 be a great one!

Help raise funds for a new picnic shelter at Waverly Beach Park

sample-shelter

I don't normally post items like this, but this is a community supported effort and is a good way to give back to the community your work or live in.

The Kirkland Parks Foundation (‘KPF’) is collaborating with the Rotary Club of Kirkland and the City of Kirkland to raise funds for a new picnic shelter at Waverly Beach Park. The newly formed KPF has a goal of raising $50,000 of the total $150,000 project cost with the help of the community.

The funding is due to be completed by June of 2015 and then the project will be put out to bid. The construction is scheduled to begin fall of 2015 with a targeted completion date of the spring of 2016.

Kirkland currently has four picnic shelters throughout the community and they are utilized extensively for community enhancing events such as family barbeques, neighborhood picnics, etc. The addition of a picnic shelter at Waverly Beach Park would bring the total picnic shelters to five and it would be only the second one with beach access. These facilities are free for the public’s use or can be reserved in advance for a reasonable fee.

To learn more about this project and the new Kirkland Parks Foundation, visit the KPF website - https://www.kirklandparksfoundation.org or call 425-298-4046.

Make a donation to the Waverly Beach Picnic shelter. KPF was established in 2014 as a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization so all donations are tax-deductible.

How it Happens

January, 2015, has come and is almost gone and so much has already happened in this short time. Minutes turn to hours, hours to days and before you know it, another month will have flown by.

What are your plans this year? Did you make a few New Years resolutions? Are they still intact? It's good to have goals and to watch some of those goals come to fruition. Many things will happen, and we set off to make them happen, but most times, they happen in ways that we couldn't have predicted. Life is that way, and it would be rather boring if it was so predictable.

As I was thinking about this last year and what I wanted to change or improve, I thought about the people—friends, family, co-workers—everyone who may be part of that change or affected by it. So it's no wonder that in order to get from A to B, the path may be as straight as Lombard Street.

I hope for you this year that you may do that thing you've always wanted to do, start that thing you've always wanted to start or be that person you've always wanted to be. How you get there and the experiences you have will be the best part of the journey.
